The pilgrims´ paths to the Holy Mountain led through the Little Holy Mountain. Do you know it?
A small, inconspicuous and almost forgotten chapel standing next to the highway used to be an important point on pilgrimage routes.
Příbramská Svatá Hora is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. Did you know that this Baroque complex with the beautiful Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and four chapels has a smaller namesake - Mala Svatá Hora? Let's take a look at what this place is and why its name is connected with the Příbram church monument.
The Little Sister of the Holy Mountain has been accompanying pilgrims for more than 200 years.
The unassuming little chapel standing by the old Dobříš road near the turn-off to Kytín would hardly be called an important place today, but at the time of its creation (1809) it was an important point for pilgrims heading from Prague to Svatá Hora. The classical chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built by Edmund Chvalkovský, who was given land and building materials by Count Josef of Inwerth, a monk. The location of the chapel was chosen strategically because it lies halfway between Prague and Příbram and weary pilgrims could find a place to rest and contemplate during their wanderings.
Why is the place called Malá Svatá Hora? The chapel got its name because of the view that pilgrims had on clear days, when they could see from the chapel up to the towers of St. The distance between the two places is less than 30 km.
The mountain that does not lie on the mountain
Although the place is called Little Svatá Hora, it is not actually a mountain. Rather, the chapel stands on a small elevation, the highest point of which is 482 m above sea level. Příbramská Svatá Hora is situated at 586 m above sea level.
If you would like to visitthe Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Mala Svatá Hora, you can find it quite easily. It is located literally a few metres from the off-ramp of the D4 motorway between Mníšek pod Brdy and Voznice. If you don't want to drive, you can take a bus from Příbram, Dobříš, Kytín and Prague and get off at the bus stop just a short distance from the chapel.
But your exploration of pilgrimage routes and places does not have to end here. The Říp-Blaník pilgrimage trailruns around Mala Svatá Hora and can take you through the Hřebeny Nature Park to Dobříš or in the opposite direction to Mníšek pod Brdy.
