Behind the silence of churches, monasteries and pilgrimage sites
Add to plannerWhere people have gone to mine for metals in the depths of the earth, they have often sought solace and support in faith. The church was also an important vehicle of culture and education in this landscape.
Jakub Jan Ryba worked as a teacher and regenschori in Rožmital pod Třemšínem, and his Czech Christmas Mass was first heard in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Not far from Příbram lies the village of Smolotely, overlooked by the breathtaking Poppy Mountain. The local church of St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an important pilgrimage site and one of the most beautiful examples of High Baroque architecture sensitively placed in the landscape.
Another important pilgrimage site, the Augustinian monastery of Svatá Dobrotivá, takes you to the other side of the Brda Mountains, to the village of Zaječov. If you decide to combine a quiet stop with a hike or a longer walk, visit the Baroque Skalka complex, which includes the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, a monastery and a hermitage. In addition, you will have a wonderful view of Mníšek pod Brdy.
